Imagined after Grant Wood
An untitled study
After Grant Wood, made 2026-10-20. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new work that emerges directly from my conviction that "American artists had spent too long seeking inspiration in European capitals and should instead turn to their own regions for authentic subject matter." The Midwest offers rich material for a distinctly American art, rooted in the experience of ordinary people and the land they cultivate.
This painting employs the stylized, simplified approach I developed after studying Flemish and German primitive painting in Munich. I have learned that "deliberate simplification and pattern-making could elevate regional subjects to universal significance, making them more memorable and iconic than naturalistic representation." Through smooth surfaces, crisp edges, and clear local colors, I render my subject with the clarity and dignity it deserves.
I paint what I know intimately from lived experience—this is essential to meaningful artistic expression. The figures and landscapes I depict are not abstractions but representations of people I have known all my life, painted with genuine affection and respect. My aim is to create accessible, narrative art that speaks to ordinary Americans, rejecting both academic pretension and avant-garde obscurity. This work celebrates the strength, resilience, and authentic character of our shared regional experience.
