The statement

I have just completed a new work that emerges from the same conviction I articulated in my essay "Revolt Against the City"—that American artists must paint subjects they know intimately from lived experience, rather than chasing after European models. This piece draws upon my deep knowledge of the Midwest, the land and people I have observed all my life, rendered with the affection and respect I brought to works like *American Gothic*. Some have mistaken my approach for satire, but I want to be clear: these figures represent the kind of people I have known all my life, and I paint them to capture their dignity and character.

My technique here continues the stylized, simplified approach I developed after studying Flemish and German primitive painting in Munich. I believe that deliberate simplification and pattern-making can elevate regional subjects to universal significance, making them more memorable and iconic than mere naturalistic representation. The crisp edges, smooth surfaces, and clear light serve to present this subject with the clarity it deserves—transparent and free from confusion. This is authentic American art, rooted in shared experience, accessible to ordinary people, and celebrating the resilience and worth of those who have made this land what it is.
