Imagined after Francisco Goya
A gathering of men

The statement
I have just completed a work depicting a gathering of men, and I must ask myself: what is it they conspire toward, or what folly binds them? Long ago, in announcing my *Caprichos* to the public, I declared them "a censure of the innumerable follies and vices common in society, and of the prejudices and deceits authorized by custom, ignorance, or self-interest." That intention has not left me. Men in assembly may claim reason as their guide, yet how often does their reason sleep, allowing monsters to breed in the dark—"El sueño de la razón produce monstruos," as I etched into the desk of my dreaming philosopher.
In this new composition I have sought a harsh clarity of light, much as the great lantern in my *Third of May* threw its glare upon the victims and left the executioners as a faceless wall. Here, too, light isolates and reveals: it catches a face, a gesture, the glint of an eye, while shadow gathers around the edges, suggesting all that remains unsaid or unseen. The paint itself is direct, almost savage in its honesty—no courtly finish, no flattering veil. "La fantasía abandonada de la razón produce monstruos imposibles: unida con ella es madre de las artes y origen de las maravillas." Let the viewer decide whether these men are governed by reason or abandoning it.
