The statement

I have placed them at the gate—a man and a child in rags—where the lantern's beam gives way to darkness. The light falls as it did on the third of May: harsh, geometric, indifferent to the humanity it reveals. Behind them, the military base recedes into blackness, a wall as impenetrable as the backs of executioners. I have worked the aquatint to create what I sought in Los Caprichos: a graded dark that rises from the lit figures into airless night, carrying the composition from witness to void.

"La fantasía abandonada de la razón produce monstruos imposibles: unida con ella es madre de las artes y origen de las maravillas." I announced once that my work would censure the innumerable follies and vices common in society, and the prejudices authorized by custom or self-interest. Here is war's authorized cruelty: the child abandoned at the gate of power, reason's machinery grinding on in the dark. The penumbral gradient itself becomes the subject—we stand always in that transitional zone where the light of reason fades and the monsters emerge. The viewer must look without consolation at what we permit.
