A cat shooting lasers, after Francisco Goya

The statement

In this peculiar work, I explore the paradox where fantasy and reason intersect, a theme central to my 'Los Caprichos'. The subject, a cat manifesting supernatural abilities to shoot lasers, underscores my creed: "La fantasía abandonada de la razón produce monstruos imposibles". The cat embodies the unleashed imagination, adorned with wondrous spectacle but absent rational anchors — a nuanced reflection on the follies society embraces unchecked by reason.

The treatment of the piece draws heavily from the tone set in my earlier works; the laser beams, stark and luminous, cut through the dimly rendered background, much like the harsh light in 'The Third of May 1808'. This lighting serves to isolate the figure dramatically, allowing for a visceral engagement with the subject.

I invite viewers to grapple with the authenticity and sublimity of this image. It casts doubt on the bizarre desires indulged without the guidance of reason—echoing a skeptical eye not unfamiliar to my audience. As in my Black Paintings, I aim to evoke the terror and wonder that challenge comprehension. In this supposed whimsy, I prompt profound contemplation, a mirror to the incredible yet unsettling depths of human imagination.
