Imagined after Francisco Goya
Watermelon man
After Francisco Goya, made 2026-08-18. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have depicted a vendor of watermelons not as a picturesque study of rustic life, but as an examination of how society transforms honest labor into spectacle and grotesque caricature. As I wrote in announcing *Los Caprichos*, my work aims to censure "the innumerable follies and vices common in society, and of the prejudices and deceits authorized by custom, ignorance, or self-interest." This watermelon man—whether he peddles his fruit in the plaza or becomes himself a kind of performed identity—reveals how custom and commerce distort human dignity.
I have employed the stark contrasts I used in *The Third of May 1808*, where harsh light throws certain truths into relief while leaving others in shadow. The handling is direct, almost crude in places, rejecting the polished surfaces of court painting. The viewer should feel the tension between comedy and cruelty, between the surface absurdity and the deeper indictment. "La fantasía abandonada de la razón produce monstruos imposibles: unida con ella es madre de las artes y origen de las maravillas"—imagination abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters, but united with reason it is the mother of the arts. Here, I unite both to reveal what we pretend not to see.
