Imagined after Giovanni Bellini

The statement
I have spent my life learning to paint what devotion looks like when it shares the air we breathe. In this new work, I return once more to the sacred group—not as figures standing against gold, but as presences caught in the same light that falls on stone and cloth in our own world. Oil allows me to build that light in layers: glaze upon glaze until flesh holds warmth, until the Madonna and Child feel near enough to touch, yet removed enough to remain holy.
"The San Zaccaria Altarpiece is cited as the moment when a Venetian altar becomes a unified volume of colored air rather than a gold-ground assembly of saints—oil glaze as the medium of that unity." That unity is still my aim. Here, figures and ground belong to one another; the viewer stands not before a wall, but inside a shared space of contemplation. I want serenity—the quiet that invites empathy rather than commands awe. "The Frick St Francis is read as devotion conducted through looking at the created world: the saint's attention and the painter's are the same act." This new work asks the same: to look carefully is to pray.
