A landscape with a dog, after Giovanni Bellini

The statement

I have painted a landscape with a dog because devotion is not confined to saints alone — every living creature participates in the same air, the same light that unifies stone and flesh and leaf. When I painted St Francis among the rocks and laurel, "the saint's attention and the painter's are the same act, which is why the landscape is as finished as the figure." The same is true here: the dog is not an ornament but a fellow witness to the hour, standing in a world where "distance cools to blue, the near rock stays warm — atmospheric perspective in the service of a single hour of contemplation."

I have used oil glaze to bind every surface — the dog's fur, the path beneath its feet, the hills receding into dusk — into one volume of colored air. This is what I learned in painting the San Zaccaria Altarpiece, where "architecture and figures are lit by the same gold-green dusk; oil glaze unifies marble, flesh, and robe." Here, the dog stands in that same real volume, not against a gold ground but inside a world we might enter.

The viewer should feel what the dog feels: attention without language, presence without doctrine — luminosity as the content.
