The statement

I have just completed a new work in which I sought once more to restore to sacred painting the direct imitation of nature and the weight of human feeling that our art had lost. My contemporaries—even the great Dante—have remarked that I paint from life, and this I take as my sacred charge: to make visible the mystery of divine love through bodies that possess real bulk and faces that register authentic emotion.

In this work I have employed the lessons of my Lamentation, where "a diagonal rock ridge steers the eye to Christ's face and places anonymous mourners with their backs to us in the foreground, giving the figures real bulk and drawing the viewer into the space of grief." I have painted not symbols but presences—figures who occupy believable space and meet the viewer's gaze with genuine tenderness. As in my Ognissanti Madonna, where "light models her face and the fall of her robe rather than gilded pattern," I have given solidity to the sacred, making the eternal inhabit three-dimensional form.

My aim remains what it has always been: to move the heart to compassion through dignified human drama, that the viewer might enter bodily into the mystery.
