The statement

I have long labored to restore to painting what the old manner had lost: the weight and dignity of living flesh, the honest play of light across a human face, the space in which grief or tenderness can truly unfold. My contemporaries say I paint from nature, and it is so—I wish the Virgin to sit with the solidity of a woman who has borne a son, the mourner to possess real bulk, not merely gilded pattern against heaven's gold.

In this new work I have sought again to give sacred drama the presence it demands. I compose not for decorative symmetry but to steer the eye where the heart must go—a diagonal ridge to point toward a face, a figure with its back turned to draw you bodily into the scene. I want the viewer to stand *within* the circle of compassion, to feel the tenderness passing between mother and child, the dignity even of anonymous mourners hunched in sorrow. Light and shadow model the forms; the figures occupy believable space and meet one another with human gentleness. If the painting moves you to pity, if you sense the weighty reality of their suffering, then I have succeeded.
