The statement

I have painted a tennis court with an Australian shepherd chasing tons of tennis balls around because I needed a modern subject that would give me the same bodily demand I found on the raft. The Raft is read as contemporary history raised to epic scale: a documented wreck and political scandal reconstructed from studies of the living and the dead so that the Salon would have to look at it. Here the demand is not survival but animal force—a dog in pure motion, not myth. I have studied speed before: The Epsom Derby is cited as a study of speed—horses designed in a flying gallop—a modern subject I took from English sporting art and recast in my own constructive paint. The shepherd is the same principle: a body stretched across the court in a frieze of strain and joy, the balls a scatter of yellow against green turf. The paint is constructive, not polished. I want the viewer to feel the dog's muscle and breath, the absurdity and vitality of the scene. This is not costume. This is now.
