Imagined after George Bellows
An untitled study
After George Bellows, made 2026-08-21. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted the ring and the street because they are where the modern American body lives — not in polite parlors but in packed rooms and tenement canyons where force and density are the facts. Under Robert Henri in New York, I absorbed the Ashcan creed of painting the life around me with rapid, loaded oil — a method I then pushed toward the slashing bodies of Sharkey's and the vertical cliff of the Lower East Side. The Sharkey's canvases treat illegal and club boxing as a public subject rather than as sporting anecdote; *Both Members of This Club* makes the racial charge explicit, while *Stag at Sharkey's* locks two torsos into a single X of wet, meaty strokes. In *Cliff Dwellers*, the street becomes a stack, not a corridor — laundry lines and fire escapes stripe the upper half, and heat is a matter of brick red and a bleached sky rather than of a single heroic body.
This new work continues that claim: the modern city is our history painting, and vitality is found in the raw, unidealized press of bodies and crowds.
