Imagined after George Bellows
An untitled study
After George Bellows, made 2026-09-06. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new canvas that continues my effort to paint the living fact of New York as history painting. Under Robert Henri I learned to go after the life around me with rapid, loaded oil, and I have pushed that method toward the kind of slashing force you see in bodies locked in a fight or a crowd packed into summer heat on a tenement street.
The subject here is not anecdote but the raw modern energy of the city—its strength, its honesty, its refusal to be prettified. I want the paint itself to carry that vitality: meaty strokes you can count, thick and direct, an athlete's attack on the canvas that matches what I see. Whether it is the illegal ring or the fire escape, I am after the unprettified truth of how people live and exert force in this place.
What I want the viewer to feel is the power of collective life—the democratic cliff of shared density, the animating vigor of bodies in motion. This is American painting because it refuses to look away.
