An untitled study, after Frans Hals

The statement

I have just completed a work that I trust will meet the room as my civic banquets and private sitters do—with the look of paint still moving and a face that seems to breathe. The subject is drawn from the same Haarlem company I have always kept: not mythological types but present figures whose character can be carried by a few wet marks. As Slive notes of my practice, "The slashed highlights of lace and smile are read as a deliberate look of speed—alla prima as rhetoric—even when group portraits were built in the studio over time." This piece follows that principle. Black and a few accents of light are palette enough; the stroke must feel unrehearsed even when it is not, so that the viewer meets a living glance rather than a frozen likeness. My St George officers turn and gesture as if the table were still being set; the Laughing Cavalier holds his smirk mid-breath. This new work seeks the same vivacity—a face or gesture that draws others in not by finish but by the attractive liveliness of paint that has not yet settled. The sitter, whether a known local or an imagined figure, should seem to address the room as I address the canvas: with energy, without calculation, and with the conviction that presence is worth more than polish.
