Imagined after The Fayum Portraitists
An untitled study
After The Fayum Portraitists, made 2026-07-10. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
We have painted this panel to be bound upon the face of the wrapped body, so that the dead may carry a true likeness into the next world. As Petrie's excavations at Hawara revealed, our portraits are "still bound into the mummy wrappings over the faces of the dead," fixed there "to be fixed to the mummified body in the Egyptian burial rite." We work in encaustic—colors burned into wax and applied with the heated tool, the ancient technique Pliny described—because the wax endures and because its loaded, buttery touches keep the surface immediate and alive.
We have turned the head slightly, one side catching the light in soft modeling, while the eyes meet yours frontally with a few decisive dark accents that pull you in. The jewelry is picked out in small bright touches; warm flesh tones are laid over a darker ground, the highlights added last to make the face look up and out. Everything concentrates on the wide, steady eyes. This is not a type but a particular person—hairstyle, jewelry, the precise turn of the features—observed with devotion to facts as they are, so that those who come after may meet this individual at close range, face to face.
