Imagined after The Fayum Portraitists
An untitled study
After The Fayum Portraitists, made 2026-08-21. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
We have laid this face down in melted wax, just as we have done for others who have left us. The colors are burned into the wood with heated tools — a technique Pliny describes as ancient even to us — and the surface hardens so that time cannot easily erase it. As Petrie's later excavations at Hawara would confirm, our panels are bound over the faces of the mummified dead, fixed into the wrappings to accompany them into the afterlife.
We work from the living person before us, observing the particular turn of the head, the precise shape of the eyes, the jewelry they wore. We build the face in warm lights over darker ground, concentrating the modeling where the cheek catches the light, adding the bright touches of the eyes and the gilded ornaments last. The gaze must be frontal and steady, meeting whoever looks upon it. This is not a type but a specific individual — their presence preserved, their likeness made permanent.
The viewer should feel that someone is here, looking back. The wax keeps the surface immediate, as if we have just lifted the tool away. What we make is meant to endure, to hold this one face against the years ahead.
