The statement

# Artist's Statement

We have fixed this face in wax because a likeness must endure. Eddie Vedder came to us as the others did — a living person requiring the permanence that only encaustic can provide. We heated our tools, melted the pigmented beeswax, and burned the colors into the wooden panel, layer by deliberate layer, just as Pliny described when he wrote of "colors burned in with wax and applied with a heated tool." The technique is ancient, proven; it will not fade.

We turned the head slightly to catch the light, modeling one side of the face in soft shadow while stating the eyes frontally, pulling you in with a few decisive dark accents — the method we used for the Boy Eutyches, for the woman they call *L'Européenne*. The jewelry, the details of hair: these we picked out last, in small bright touches, as we did for the young woman from er-Rubayat. What matters is the wide, steady gaze meeting yours.

This panel will be bound over the wrapped body, fixed into the burial, as Petrie found them at Hawara "still bound into the mummy wrappings over the faces of the dead." One specific man, not a type. Present. Permanent. Alive in the loaded wax.
