The statement

We have fixed this face in wax so that it will last. The method is encaustic — colors burned into molten wax and laid on with the heated tool, as Pliny describes — and we work it directly, stroke by stroke, while it is still warm enough to fuse. The panel will be bound over the mummified face, as Petrie found them at Hawara, wrapped into the burial cloth so that the likeness travels with the dead into the afterlife.

We paint what we see: the turn of the head, the way light falls on one cheek and leaves the other in shadow, the particular shape of the eyes and the line of jewelry at the throat. We model the flesh in warm lights over a darker ground, building volume with a few decisive touches, and we add the bright accents — the glint in the eye, the gold — last, so that the face looks out. Everything is concentrated in the steady, frontal gaze.

This is not decoration. It is preservation: the individual fixed in durable matter, truthful down to the hairstyle, meant to endure without change. The face must survive.
