Imagined after The Fayum Portraitists
A portrait of a young man
After The Fayum Portraitists, made 2026-07-10. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
We have painted this young man's face so that it will endure. The painted panel will be bound over his wrapped body, fixed there to accompany him into the afterlife, as Petrie's excavations at Hawara recovered painted panel portraits still bound into the mummy wrappings over the faces of the dead, establishing that the likenesses were made to be fixed to the mummified body in the Egyptian burial rite. We work in encaustic—colors burned in with wax and applied with a heated tool, as Pliny describes, the very method by which these panels are made. The warm wax catches the light in the cheek and temple, models the shadowed side of the face, then we add the jewelry and the bright accents of the eyes last, in small decisive touches that make the head look up and out. We turn him slightly, but the eyes meet yours directly. This is not a type but a particular person: his hairstyle, the set of his mouth, the way the light falls across his brow. You stand before him and he is here, now, meeting your gaze across the threshold. The durable medium and the frontal address are meant to fix this face against time, to hold his presence permanently.
