Imagined after Exekias
A rodeo image
After Exekias, made 2026-07-11. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have made a krater showing a rider thrown from a bucking bull, and I have painted it. The subject came to me described as a contest of man and beast in an open arena—foreign to our games, but the drama of it is human and clear. I chose the moment after the rider has lost his seat but before he strikes the earth, when the outcome is certain but the fall not yet complete. That suspension lets the tension hold.
I bent the composition to the vessel as I always do: the bull's arched spine echoes the krater's shoulder, and the rider's body curves to answer it, so form and picture are one thing. The earth-line runs level to give stability against the violence overhead. I worked the musculature of bull and man with the finest incision I can command, each sinew legible, and I filled the rider's chaps and the bull's flank with meanders and rosettes in the manner of my cloaks on the amphora where Achilles and Ajax play at dice. Ornament does not obscure—it clarifies.
I want the viewer to see dignity even in defeat, serenity even in motion. The space around the figures is empty so the moment can resonate in silence.
