A garden with gnomes, after Exekias

The statement

I have painted a garden with small bearded figures among the plants, and I have signed the vessel ἐποίησεν and ἔγραψεν — "made [me]" and "painted [me]" — claiming both the shaping of the clay and the application of the figures, as I do when the subject and execution warrant my name.

The gnomes stand or crouch in attitudes of quiet watchfulness, their postures echoing the curve of the vessel's body. I have arranged them so their gazes and gestures converge toward the center, drawing the eye inward as the spears of Achilles and Ajax converge upon their board. Each beard and fold of cap I have incised with the same fine needle that renders the meanders and rosettes on a hero's cloak — ornament and anatomy are one craft.

The garden is not cluttered. A single tree, a planted staff, a few clear forms in empty space: this is how a charged moment breathes. I want the viewer to feel the stillness, the gravity that belongs even to small bearded watchers when they are painted with care and when the composition holds them in untroubled balance.
