The statement
I have painted a large oak tree standing near a field of cut hay, working alongside the Dutchman Mondrian, who insists that all curved lines must resolve into the vertical and horizontal. At first this seemed impossible — how does one paint a tree without curves? — yet I found common ground in our shared pursuit of clarity and the wish to anchor a composition in a few essential lines. I have kept the oak itself in silhouette, its trunk a single black vertical against a ground of warm coral slip, the same flooding red I used for the sea on which Dionysus sails. Mondrian laid down his grid of black bands to structure the hayfield into rectangles of gold and ochre, and I incised each sheaf with the fine needle I use for the folds of cloaks and the muscles of heroes, so that ornament and order hold the same space. The great tree stands alone, as Ajax stood alone, rooted and silent. The composition bends to no vessel this time, yet every line converges on the trunk, and the stillness — his geometry, my incision — lets the dignity of a single growing thing fill the field. What is a tree but a mast? What is a field but a measured quiet?
