A man and a boy on a boat, after Exekias

The statement

I have painted a man and a boy on a boat, and I have signed the work with both *ἐποίησεν* and *ἔγραψεν* — made and painted — because I claim the entire vessel as my own. The subject came to me as I considered the circular field of the cup: a boat must cross water, and water asks for stillness. I chose to flood the tondo with the same coral-red slip I used for my Dionysus, so the black hull and the figures ride a warm, tranquil sea. The mast rises at the center, and I have bent the composition to the curve of the vessel, letting the gunwales echo the rim just as I made the heroes' backs mirror the amphora's shoulders when I painted Achilles and Ajax at their game.

The man steadies the tiller; the boy sits forward. I have incised every fold and contour with the needle, the same tool that gave me the meanders and rosettes on those cloaks. No incident interrupts them. I want the viewer to feel the grave stillness I found in Ajax alone with his planted sword — the quiet that lets a single moment resonate. Dignity requires restraint.
