A musical figure on the vase, after Exekias

The statement

I have made this vase and painted it. The single figure stands alone with his lyre, and the whole field is given to him—no crowding, no companions to diffuse the eye's attention. I meant the viewer to rest on this one musician as on Ajax with his sword or Achilles bent over the game board, the same stillness holding the moment. The incision carries the folds of the chiton and the strings of the instrument with the same fineness I gave to the cloaks on the Vatican amphora, where I marked meanders, rosettes, and stars with the needle until ornament and anatomy became one effort. The lyre's frame curves to answer the vessel's shoulder, as the heroes' backs did, bending composition to pot. The black figure rides the coral ground—rare, but I used it when I flooded the Dionysus cup so ship and dolphins moved on a warm sea. Here it lifts the musician into a space both grand and hushed. I want the viewer to feel what silence permits: not incident, but presence; not action, but the dignity of a single soul absorbed in his art, as I am in mine.
