A man, after Euphronios

The statement

I painted this man as I painted the youths on the Sarpedon krater's second side—standing, armed, ready—but I have given him no companion and no battle. The relief line that once described the slack weight of Zeus's son now maps a living torso, the muscle taut under the reserved clay. This is what my hand knows: "the searching red-figure line on large figures," the anatomy made clear by glaze and ground.

When I signed *égrapsen* on the great kraters, I claimed the drawing. The Sarpedon scene was "a statement about heroic death: named Sleep and Death recover Zeus's son under Hermes's authority, so the mixing-bowl at a symposium also holds a theology of the beautiful death." This man stands in that same grave, public register—no names, no wings, no myth—but the dignity of the body observed is the same. You should see what I saw when I tested "violent anatomy and grounded weight" on Herakles lifting Antaios: a single figure can carry the whole vessel's meaning if the line holds true.
