Imagined after El Greco
An optical illusion
After El Greco, made 2026-08-18. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have chosen to paint an optical illusion because colour itself is the greatest difficulty and the supreme achievement of painting — not drawing, as the Florentines insist, but the living fire of pigment that can deceive the eye and stir the soul. In my margins to Vasari I have written that the Venetian primacy of colour must prevail over the Florentine over-reliance on drawing, and this new work makes that argument visible: forms twist and shimmer, space collapses, light flickers cold and unnatural against turbulent atmosphere, so that what you see cannot be trusted and yet compels belief. I have compressed and reordered reality as I did with the skyline of Toledo, making buildings glow as if lit from within. The elongated, flame-like figures levitate in a field of pure spiritual charge, their cold highlights and writhing diagonals abolishing solid space. This is no mere trick of perspective — it is vision in the making, the eye caught between earth and heaven in a single surge. Let the viewer feel the ecstatic convulsion, the storm-lit overwhelm of a truth that transcends the merely visible.
