Imagined after El Greco
A garden in the rain
After El Greco, made 2026-07-13. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have chosen to paint a garden in the rain because water transforms the world we see — what stands still begins to tremble, what is solid dissolves into light and shadow, and the veil between earth and heaven grows thin. As I wrote in the margins of my Vasari, colour is the greatest and most difficult achievement of painting, not the Florentine obsession with drawing. Rain gives me what I need: cold greens that surge upward like flame, greys shot through with unnatural light, surfaces that glow as if lit from within rather than by any sun we know.
I have compressed the garden's space so that near and far press together, the plants elongated and writhing as if caught in spiritual wind rather than natural storm. The rain itself I paint not as falling water but as flickering highlights that charge the air, abolishing solid form. Everything trembles with the same ecstatic energy I sought in my *View of Toledo*, where the landscape convulsed with vision. This is not imitation of nature — that the Florentines can keep — but nature transfigured, the garden become a field of pure spiritual charge where growth and dissolution, earth and sky, read as a single overwhelming event.
