Imagined after El Greco
A stampede in the prairie
After El Greco, made 2026-07-11. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a stampede in the prairie as an occasion to explore what I hold most difficult: the rendering of furious motion through colour alone, not through the servile copying of contours. As Pacheco recorded when he visited me, I maintain that "Michelangelo was a good man but did not know how to paint"—I mean by this that drawing, however learned, cannot convey the terror and sublimity of nature in violent action as colour can.
The herd surges upward across the canvas in a single convulsive diagonal, their flanks catching cold, flickering light against a sky of ink-blue storm clouds slashed by unnatural radiance—the same storm-light I used to make Toledo tremble in my view of that city. I have compressed and distorted the animals' anatomy, elongating their bodies into flame-like forms that abolish ordinary space, so that the viewer confronts not a naturalistic scene but a vision of elemental force. The prairie itself glows with cold greens and greys, as if lit from within by spiritual charge.
Let the viewer feel the overwhelming power of creation in motion—beauty so violent it approaches the terrifying, where nature reveals its kinship with the divine storms of Revelation.
