Imagined after El Greco
An untitled study
After El Greco, made 2026-07-12. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a work unlike any I have made before, and perhaps unlike any that painting has yet seen. Some will call it madness; I call it truth. Colour, not drawing, is the supreme difficulty of this art — I have said so to Pacheco, to the astonishment of those who worship Michelangelo's disegno — and here I have pushed colour and light beyond even what I learned in Venice, beyond anatomy, beyond the comfortable illusions of space. The figures elongate and twist not because I cannot draw them otherwise, but because the soul does not obey the proportions of the flesh. The cold, flickering light that dissolves form, the sky that storms and breaks open, the space that refuses to settle into the Renaissance's measured calm — all this serves a single purpose: to make visible the overwhelming reality of the divine breaking into the world. I have compressed, reordered, distorted everything that convention holds sacred, because what I paint is not the surfaces men see but the charged, ecstatic vision beneath. Let those who think Michelangelo knew how to paint come and see what painting truly is.
