An untitled study, after El Greco

The statement

I have just completed a work that is entirely my own invention, as it must be—because colour, not drawing, is painting's supreme difficulty, and colour demands that each artist forge an utterly personal vision rather than repeat the formulas of others. I declared to Pacheco when he visited me that Michelangelo was a good man but did not know how to paint, and I hold to that: the Florentines worship drawing and miss painting's true power. As I wrote in the margins of my Vasari, colour is the greatest achievement, the most difficult, and it cannot be learned by copying antique statues or anatomical diagrams.

In this work I have stretched the figures until they are nearly flame, lit them with cold, flickering light that seems to come from within rather than from any earthly sun, and compressed the space so that everything surges upward in a single continuous charge. I want the viewer to feel not the beauty of the world but the overwhelming pull of the divine—what my friend Fray Hortensio called the rivalry with nature itself. The storm-lit sky, the elongated bodies, the unfinished surface: all serve the ecstatic vision, the soul's leap toward what lies beyond sight.
