Imagined after Albrecht Dürer
A picture of a american staffordshire terrier
After Albrecht Dürer, made 2026-07-09. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have set out to draw from nature what lies hidden within it — in this case, the form and character of the American Staffordshire terrier. As I argued in my Four Books on Human Proportion, "art lies truly within nature, and whoever can draw it out possesses it," and though I wrote of the human figure, the principle holds for all living creatures that God has made. Beauty in any form can be approached through disciplined measurement and patient observation.
I have worked as I did with my Young Hare of 1502, building weight and texture from countless fine, directional strokes, fixing the reflected light in the eye to anchor both the source of illumination and the sense of a breathing, living animal observed from life. The terrier's muscular solidity, the fall of its coat, the set of its jaw — all demand the same exhaustive attention I have long given to printmaking, where every surface must demonstrate the burin's range.
The viewer should see not sentiment, but truth: the dog's strength, its alertness, its particular presence in the world, drawn out and possessed through diligent craft.
