Imagined after Albrecht Dürer
An untitled study

The statement
I have portrayed this subject in my own colours and by my own hand, as the inscription declares, for I believe that art lies hidden within nature and belongs to whoever can draw it forth. In setting down "an original work" I assert what I have long practised: that true invention springs not from idle fancy but from disciplined observation married to learned measurement. The human figure, as I argued in my Four Books on Human Proportion, "can be approached through disciplined measurement," and beauty is pursued through the intelligence that orders what the eye receives.
Every line and tone in this composition carries the patience learned at the burin—the same exhaustive, hair-by-hair diligence that built the hare's fur and the knight's silvered armor. I have centred the form and brought forward each surface with the printmaker's care, so that what stands before you is both a living presence and a demonstration of method. The viewer should see in this work not imitation but possession: I have drawn the art out of nature, and it is mine to give.
