Imagined after Duccio di Buoninsegna
A city street with sunset
After Duccio di Buoninsegna, made 2026-07-09. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a panel showing a city street bathed in the glow of sunset — a subject far removed from the sacred commissions that have occupied my hand these many years. Yet I found myself drawn to render this humble scene with the same devotion I brought to the Maestà, where I was bound by contract "to work on it continuously and with his own hand, and to use only the finest materials." Here too I have worked continuously, seeking to capture the moment when earthly light becomes something numinous.
The sunset transforms the street into gold, and I have laid the color like enamel — amber, rose, and deepening blue — so that the buildings glow as if touched by divine favor. My calligraphic line, which has always traced the gold-edged mantle of the Virgin, now follows the architecture's edges and the figures' silhouettes with the same flowing grace. I seek to soften the geometry of stone and brick into something tender, much as I have sought to humanize the severe Byzantine icon through lyrical beauty.
I hope the viewer will feel the luminosity of this everyday moment elevated into something holy — proof that grace dwells not only in heaven but in the golden hour of our earthly streets.
