The statement
I have completed this panel with the same devotion and craft I brought to the great Maestà, employing "only the finest materials" as the 1308 contract bound me to do. Every stroke of the brush has been my own hand, for such sacred images demand continuous labor and cannot be entrusted to assistants alone. The Virgin's mantle flows in that calligraphic line I have perfected over decades—deep ultramarine edged in gold that sings like a melody down each fold. I have softened the austere Byzantine forms into something more tender, preserving the holy mystery while allowing the human bond of Mother and Child to shine through. The gold ground is burnished to radiance, the colors set like enamel, so that the panel glows with luminous beauty befitting its divine subject. My intent is always the same: to create an image of such grace and loveliness that the viewer feels the gentle affection between heaven and earth, and kneels in prayer as if before the sacred presence itself. This is the art of our Sienese school—refined, elegant, and shot through with light.
