The statement

I have returned to bronze for this figure because no other medium so perfectly captures the presence of a body standing in actual space. The lost-wax method, refined through careful chasing of the surface, allows me to treat bronze as if it were skin—a technique I employed in the Bargello David, where the youth's form reads not as stone but as flesh under Florentine light.

This work recovers an antique type, yet it is no mere quotation. Like my Gattamelata, which brought the authority of the Roman rider to a modern condottiere in Padua's piazza, this figure claims civic dignity through bodily truth. I mean the viewer to walk around it, to see it turn and occupy the courtyard as a living guardian occupies a street.

The stance is alert, the surface watchful—qualities I sought in the Saint George, whose marble cuirass and scanning gaze make him a protector of the republic, not a mystic vision. Here too, the figure holds public office without bombast. It stands, it watches, it breathes. This is not theater; it is the recovery of sculpture's power to place a human form, complete and free, in our shared world.
