A gathering in the new world, after Eugène Delacroix

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have just laid down my brush on a subject that has long stirred my imagination: a gathering in the new world. The theme called not for archaeological precision but for the living character that only colour and movement can convey. I have striven to capture the vitality of peoples meeting on unfamiliar ground, their costumes and gestures speaking across an unbridgeable distance. As I wrote in my Journal, "the reflected half-tint is the principle that must predominate, for it gives an object its true tone and its living character; light, which the schools overvalue, is really only an accident. Colour is governed by fixed laws that can be studied like music." Here I have built the composition from warm ochres and russet shadows against cool greys—the colour itself must carry the emotion, not merely describe the scene.

The figures surge diagonally across the canvas, as in my *Liberty* and *Sardanapalus*, refusing the static groupings of the Neoclassicists. I want the viewer to feel the exuberance and apprehension of first encounter, the vigour of conflicting worlds colliding. Colour and imagination, not drawing alone, must be the vehicle of feeling. Let the canvas breathe with restless energy.
