Imagined after Eugène Delacroix
A barter
After Eugène Delacroix, made 2026-08-14. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have chosen to paint a scene of barter because it allows me to unite all the phases of painting at once — colour, movement, and the living interplay of human figures in a moment of exchange. Here, in the marketplace's press of bodies and goods, I find not a static tableau but a surge of vitality, an animating force that colour alone can capture.
As I have long held in my Journal, "the reflected half-tint is the principle that must predominate, for it gives an object its true tone and its living character; light, which the schools overvalue, is really only an accident." In this composition, the coloured shadows — warm reds glancing off copper vessels, cool blues in the folds of worn fabric — build the richness of the scene. I have refused the dead light of the academies and instead made colour the vehicle of feeling, governed by discernible laws as fixed as those of music.
The viewer should feel the exuberance of human commerce, the vigor of gesture and glance, the expressiveness of a world in flux. Colour and imagination, not drawing alone, grasp the art whole.
