Imagined after Gustave Courbet
An untitled study
After Gustave Courbet, made 2026-10-26. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new work that translates the customs and appearance of my own epoch as I myself judge them — for that, as I wrote in my Realist manifesto of 1855, is my aim: to make living art of the real and present world. I paint only what I see, what I can touch and verify. Show me an angel and I will paint one, but until then I will confine myself to the seen and the actual.
This painting refuses the idealising comforts of the academy. I have built the composition with the palette knife, laying earth-browns and solid matter directly onto the canvas so that the viewer feels the weight and presence of things as they are, not as sentiment would dress them. The subject is drawn from the life around me — common people, common labour, the plain facts of existence — and I grant them the scale and gravity that convention reserves for gods and generals.
I want the viewer to stand before this work as a fellow witness, not a consumer of flattery or fantasy. My Realism is not a copying of surfaces but a knowing in order to be able to do: to see clearly, to judge honestly, and to paint what is actually there.
