Self portrait of me, after Gustave Courbet

The statement

I have painted myself as I am — no more, no less. "To make living art," as I declared in my 1855 manifesto, I must "translate the customs, the ideas, and the appearance of my own epoch as I myself judged them," and what epoch begins if not with the man who sees it? I have never painted an angel because I have never seen one; show me an angel and I will paint one. By that same principle, I paint my own face because I know it, because it exists, because it is real.

The treatment is direct. I press close to the picture plane, as I did with the stone breakers trapped against their dark bank, making no comfortable distance between subject and viewer. My face fills the canvas, brightly lit against shadow, and my eyes meet yours without apology. This is not flattery, not the ideal — it is "knowing in order to be able to do." The knife lays the paint with the same solidity I gave the stones and rags of labour, giving my features their literal, material weight.

You should feel confronted by a presence that refuses to perform, that asserts its autonomy and its right to judge the world it paints.
