A man with, after Gustave Courbet

The statement

I have just finished a self-portrait — a man with hands clenched to his temples, staring out as though the canvas were a mirror. The face fills the frame, brightly lit against a dark ground, and the viewer becomes the object of that desperate glare. I painted it because I must translate what I see and what I feel, not what the Academy dictates. As I wrote in my manifesto for the Pavilion du Réalisme, my aim is "to translate the customs, the ideas, and the appearance of my own epoch as I judged them — in short, to make living art." This means painting myself as I am, seized by real emotion, not posed as some classical hero.

The tight cropping and frontal assault deny distance or decorum; the clutching hands and staring eyes push the feeling to the surface with the same honesty I bring to a stone-breaker or a burial. I have never seen an angel, so I cannot paint one — but I have seen desperation in my own face, and so I do. The viewer should feel the force of a living presence, unmediated and unidealised, accountable only to what is real.
