A man standing, after Gustave Courbet

The statement

I have painted a man standing because he is there, in front of me, as real and present as the stones under his feet. "In the printed preface to his independent 1855 exhibition Courbet defined Realism as knowing in order to be able to do (savoir pour pouvoir), and set as his aim to translate the customs, the ideas, and the appearance of his own epoch as he himself judged them — in short, to make living art." This figure is not a hero from antiquity, not an angel I have never seen — I paint only what exists, what I can witness with my own eyes.

I have worked the canvas with the knife, building his form with the same literal weight I gave the stones in *The Stone Breakers*, the earth-browns and greys that make matter palpable. He stands pressed close to the picture plane, his body asserting its solidity, its right to occupy space without pretense or idealization. There is no narrative to console you, no sentiment to soften the fact of his presence. He is simply here, as I am here, as you are here — and that frank encounter, that refusal to deceive or elevate beyond the real, is the living art I demand.
