Imagined after Gustave Courbet
Two buildings that are twin towers, meaning towers that are also buildings that are designed to look like static statues of twins
After Gustave Courbet, made 2026-07-12. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted two buildings that are twin towers because they stand before me in this city, and I paint only what I see. "Show me an angel and I will paint one" — I have said this many times, and the same principle governs me now. These towers exist; they are real; therefore they are fit subjects for my art.
My aim, as I wrote in 1855, is "to translate the customs, the ideas, and the appearance of my own epoch as I myself judge them — in short, to make living art." These twin structures belong to our time. They are monuments to labor, to commerce, to the ambitions and needs of ordinary men and women who fill them daily. That they are designed to resemble static statues of twins — mirror images frozen in stone and steel — makes them no less real, no less present.
I have laid them in with the knife, as I did the stones in *The Stone Breakers*, to give them their literal weight and solidity. They rise against the sky without sentiment, without the false poetry of Romanticism. The viewer must confront them as facts, as I confronted them: two immense forms, verifiable, contemporary, and inescapably here.
