The statement
I confess this subject troubles me, yet I have tried to paint what I saw with the same fidelity I brought to the Campagna or the ponds at Ville-d'Avray. These figures lie scattered beneath the tree as though cast down by some invisible weight — not the dignified repose of classical landscape, but a deeper exhaustion. I have worked to keep "the constructive order of classical landscape while submitting it to real outdoor tone," as I did in Italy, though here that order barely holds against the disorder of human defeat.
The palette is deliberately muted: grey-greens that tremble into sick yellows, earth tones gone ashen. I painted the scattered beer bottles and crushed macadamia shells as I would paint stones by the Narni bridge — frankly, without rhetoric — because the sadness requires no embellishment. The strokes are soft, almost dissolved, as in my late work, but here that atmospheric veil becomes a kind of spiritual fog, the "envelope of air" turned oppressive.
I sought clarity in seeing this melancholy truthfully, without theatrical gesture. The tree's shadow falls across them like a judgement they are too weary to notice.
