The statement

I have set before you once again the humblest subjects — a few household objects arranged upon a table, nothing more. My friend Cochin has recorded that I work slowly, layering paint with a patience that tries even my own endurance, because I believe that although one uses colours, one paints with feeling. It is this feeling I labour to summon, not the mere likeness of copper or fruit.

In *The Ray* I gave you viscera and alarm; in *The Silver Goblet* I sought the pure interval between form and shadow, warm red against deep neutral ground, every surface turned to painted substance through patient touch. Now I return to that same discipline: a few objects granted their quiet weight, their tangible presence, each rendered not as description but as something felt. The composition is spare, the palette muted — browns, greys, the soft warmth of domestic light — because simplicity allows attentiveness, and attentiveness reveals dignity even in the least pretentious things.

I ask only that you look without haste. What you see is not cleverness but the honest labour of making paint into bread, into pewter, into the very air that holds them still.
