Imagined after Jean-Siméon Chardin
An untitled study

The statement
I have spent my life learning to see truly what is before me, and to set it down with honesty rather than rhetoric. One does not choose grand subjects to make great painting — one paints with feeling, using colours as the means. This new work continues what I have always sought: to render ordinary things with such patient attention that their substance becomes palpable, that the viewer might almost touch the surface of copper or feel the weight of fruit in the hand.
I arrange only a few objects, placed with care so that each interval and relation feels necessary. The palette is muted — warm browns and reds against deep neutral grounds — because I do not seek brilliance but harmony and truth. My method is slow, laborious; I build the paint until the thing itself seems to emerge, not described but present. Whether it is the wet viscera of a ray, the translucent sphere of a soap bubble, or the quiet dignity of a mother and her children at table, my aim remains the same: to grant these humble subjects the grave, unironic respect they deserve, and to still them into a contemplative hush where nothing is painted that is not also felt.
