3 figures at a framing shop, after Paul Cézanne

The statement

I have returned again to the human figure in its daily labor, searching for that realization of my sensations which has driven me, year after year, to paint the same subjects. Here are three souls at work in the framing shop — humble, absorbed, like the card players I have studied before. I want to make of this ordinary scene something solid and durable, like the art of the museums.

I am building these figures as I would build a mountain: by the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone, everything put into proper perspective. The plane of the workbench tilts upward, the angles of tools and bodies hold one another in place, and the whole surface must lock together as a single constructed fabric. I lay my colors — the ochres of wood, the blues of work-worn cloth — not to describe surfaces but to construct volumes, warm advancing against cool, each touch serving the architectural whole.

The stable triangle of their grouped postures, the vertical of a frame's edge, the weight of concentration — these are my means. I pursue not the anecdote of their trade but the depth of what painting can be when every element answers to every other in honest, visible labor.
