The statement

I have set out to become the pictorial historian of the Native peoples of this continent, and I am resolved to visit every tribe I can reach and record their looks, dress, and manners before the advance of civilization sweeps them away. As I wrote in my Letters and Notes, "the history and customs of a vanishing people, preserved in pictures, were a subject worthy of a man's whole life," and I have given mine to this purpose—to rescue from oblivion the appearance and dignity of nations whom contact is rapidly destroying, so that a truthful record will survive for posterity.

This new work continues that mission. Every detail—every ornament, every gesture, every ceremonial element—is drawn from direct observation, not studio invention. I paint what I have seen with my own eyes, on the spot, because authenticity is the entire value of the enterprise. The composition serves documentary fidelity: I arrange the scene to show the subject clearly and completely, so the viewer a century hence will know exactly how these people looked and lived. My palette follows nature as I found it—earth, hide, sky, painted skin—because veracity, not pictorial effect, is my governing principle. I wish the viewer to feel they are looking through a window onto a vanishing world, and to recognize the dignity and seriousness of the people I have been privileged to witness.
