The statement
I have spent years among the Plains nations recording their manners, customs, and appearance before the advance of civilization could alter them, for "the history and customs of a vanishing people, preserved in pictures, were a subject worthy of a man's whole life." In this new work, I have turned my attention to the birds that inhabit these vast prairies—creatures as native to this land as the peoples I have documented, and equally deserving of a faithful record.
The birds here are rendered with the same fidelity I have brought to every portrait and ceremony: observed directly, painted truthfully, without ornament or invention. I have positioned them prominently against the open sky and prairie grass, using earth tones and careful handling to capture their living presence as I witnessed it. Just as I resolved "to rescue from oblivion the appearance and dignity" of the Native nations, so too must these winged inhabitants be preserved in paint—part of the authentic scene, part of the world that is passing. The viewer should recognize in these birds not decoration but documentary: another fragment of truth salvaged for posterity.
