The statement

I have undertaken to become the historian of these remarkable people, and I resolved years ago to visit every tribe within reach and to record their looks, dress, and customs faithfully before the destroying hand of civilisation could sweep them away. As I wrote in my *Letters and Notes*, "the history and customs of a vanishing people, preserved in pictures, were a subject worthy of a man's whole life," and I set out to rescue from oblivion the appearance and dignity of nations whom I believe the advance of our world is rapidly destroying, so that a truthful record of them might survive for posterity.

This scene was painted on the spot, from direct observation—an eyewitness account rendered with the utmost fidelity to what I actually saw. I have been charged by skeptics with invention, yet I maintain that my pictures are exact records, as I insisted when defending my account of the Mandan O-kee-pa against those who could not believe such ceremonies existed. Every ornament, every gesture, every detail of dress has been set down as it appeared before me. The viewer should understand that this is not fancy, but documentary truth—a fragment of a vanishing world preserved with sincerity and respect for the dignity of its people.
