The statement
I have set down this scene because I wished to show the dignity and repose that belong to these people when they are left undisturbed in their own country. "The history and customs of a vanishing people, preserved in pictures, were a subject worthy of a man's whole life," I wrote, and I resolved "to visit the tribes of the West and become their historian — recording their looks, dress, and manners before contact could change them." Here, in a quiet moment away from ceremony or hunt, I have tried to catch the calm self-possession I have witnessed among them.
I worked from direct observation, as I always do, employing the earth tones and clear light that belong to the prairie, arranging the figures so that their natural bearing speaks for itself. My intent remains what it has always been: "to rescue from oblivion the appearance and dignity of the Native nations, whom I believed the advance of civilisation was rapidly destroying, so that a truthful record of them would survive for posterity." The viewer should see what I saw — human beings of worth, at ease in their world, before that world is lost.
